Life Science Washington (LSW) is a 501(c)6 non-profit trade association with a 30-year history whose mission is to stimulate life science innovation, job creation and ecosystem vibrancy across Washington state through engagement, collaboration, promotion, and advocacy.
Life Science Washington Institute (LSWI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that assists life science researchers, entrepreneurs, and companies in bridging the gap between discovery and commercialization. 


Business Development Manager




Reporting directly to the Vice President, Membership Services, the Business Development Manager is responsible for recruiting and retaining members from life science organizations and research institutions, as well as service providers that support the industry; securing sponsorships for LSW programs and events; working as an ambassador for member engagement; and overseeing LSW’s Business Solution Partners Program.  LSW Business Solution Partners are industry leaders whose products and services are essential to the business operations of life science companies and with whom discounted prices and enhanced services have been negotiated on behalf of LSW members.




  • Develop and implement strategies for member retention and recruitment with the VP, Membership
  • Engage with LSW members—and prospective members—to better understand their needs/desires and introduce them to relevant LSW benefits and programs with the goals of increasing member satisfaction and retention and securing new members
  • Identify prospects and recruit new members to join LSW, from life science companies, research institutions, investors and service providers
  • Develop and update marketing collateral focused on member recruitment, retention and sponsorships in collaboration with VP, Membership Services and Marketing & Communications Manager
  • Secure sponsorships for all LSW programs and events and manage day to day relationships with sponsors; track all deliverables, ensuring payment has been received and serve as point of contact for on-site events
  • Manage relationships with LSW Business Solution Partners by helping them market their products and services to LSW members; this may include identifying prospects and accompanying sales reps on visits with member companies
  • Track and report on memberships, sponsorships and business solution partners
  • Support membership database maintenance and management
  • Attend LSW industry networking events and represent LSW at events of members and partner organizations 



  • Bachelor’s degree mandatory, preferably in science or engineering; MBA a huge plus
  • Ideally, the candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in business development, direct sales, sales management, or nonprofit membership development and a passion for the life sciences


  • This is a relationship driven position, therefore excellent interpersonal skills are a must
  • Ability to clearly and accurately represent the goals, features, and benefits of various LSW programs
  • Outstanding customer service ethics and high expectations for quality
  • Excellent written and verbal (customer presentation) communication skills; demonstrated ability to network with all levels in an organization to develop long term membership relationships
  • Must work well on teams and possess ability to seek and accept feedback from colleagues and leaders
  • Ability to work independently, and to effectively manage multiple tasks and needs; excellent organizational skills a must
  • Computer proficiency (PC-Windows preferred) and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and database software
  • Flexibility, a helpful, can-do attitude, and a sense of humor are essential
  • Willingness to step in and help wherever needed


WORKING CONDITIONS: Some travel is required (less than 10%). General office work environment. Occasional evening meetings.

We are seeking a permanent, part-time (25 hours/week) Controller to manage financial operations for both LSW and LSWI. Working with the Vice President, Finance & Administration, the Controller will be responsible for accounts payable, billing, payroll, cash management and preparation of accurate and timely financial reports for the Finance Committee, Executive Committee, CEO and other LSW senior staff. Additionally, responsibilities of the Controller include the proper recording of all financial activity in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and the implementation of proper internal controls. 




Financial Management:

  • Maintain accounting controls by preparing, recommending, reviewing and updating policies and procedures appropriate for a 501(c)6 organization to ensure accuracy in accounting activities and regulatory compliance;
  • Prepare and file local and state tax forms and annual 1099 Form;
  • Compile information and work with CPA firm to prepare and file Federal Form 990’s;
  • Work with the VP, Finance & Administration in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets and forecasts; 
  • Assist staff to understand their budgets, including monthly and quarterly reconciliation and recommendations for adjustments as needed to offset anticipated negative variances;
  • Serve as primary staff to the Treasurer and the Finance Committee of the LSW Board and the LSWI Executive Committee;
  • Prepare the monthly financial package, including summary charts, P&L, Balance Sheet, and other reports for the Finance Committee and Executive Committees;
  • Serve as primary liaison on matters pertaining to LSW’s Labor & Industry (L&I) Retro Program, and annually review and prepare checks for L&I Retro program participants;
  • Serve as LSW bookkeeper by processing bank deposits, importing transactions from e-Commerce system into Quickbooks and recording activity and reconciling checking and credit card accounts;
  • Process general Accounts Payable ensuring correct coding of transactions which are then invoiced to grants;
  • When requested, coordinate audit preparation, including scheduling, resource gathering, and recommended follow through.

Human Resources Administration:

  • Using the Paychex platform, prepare payroll & ensure all employee-related reports and tax deposits are paid correctly and on time;
  • Administer other employee benefits which include comprehensive health benefits and SIMPLE retirement plan;
  • Assist in the onboarding of new hires, including payroll and benefits enrollment;
  • Administer insurance coverage, including property and liability. 


  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting; CPA or Master’s degree strongly preferred
  • Experience with 501(c)6 and 501(c)3 accounting functions preferred
  • Experience with Quickbooks and payroll processing systems
  • Five years of professional level accrual-based accounting and finance experience including managing budgets/forecasts and preparation of financial statements
  • Experience managing audit process including serving as primary contact and representative with external audit partner
  • Experience providing support for human resource administration including benefits and payroll
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; must be able to work collaboratively with all levels of the organization and effectively deliver information and recommendations to executives and Board members
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadline requirements
  • Proven ability to work successfully in a small team environment
  • Flexibility, a helpful can-do attitude and a sense of humor are essential!

Seattle/Eastlake location.
