Life Science Summit
On October 26, 2018, we hosted the Washington State Life Science Summit at the Meydenbauer Center. Life science colleagues gathered to celebrate the winners of the Innovation of the Year and Volunteer of the Year Awards, hear an inspiring and humbling keynote address about the future of the cancer field in Seattle from Celgene CEO & Chairman, and to get a progress report regarding the three strategic initiatives Life Science Washington launched last year, including the development of a new PR campaign. We need your stories to make the campaign a success!
Life Science Washington progress report, Leslie Alexandre, DrPH, President & CEO
Dr. Alexandre shined a bright light on the industry, and particularly member companies that made huge leaps last year in innovation, growth, and scientific discovery. Dr. Alexandre also brought the community up-to-date about the strategic plan that was rolled out last year. As you might remember, there were three pillars we established to measure success against:
  • Entrepreneurship & Start-ups – in 2018, Life Science Washington Institute was created. It gives entrepreneurs the tools and support they need to grow in the industry.
  • Talent Recruitment & Workforce Development – Life Science Washington worked with Senator Guy Palumbo to help secure funds for a much-needed gap analysis. Additionally, LSW worked with colleges, universities, and companies across the Pacific Northwest to match course offerings with industry workforce needs.
  • Engagement & Advocacy – LSW engaged two PR firms to help launch a campaign building visibility for Washington’s life science industry across the state and the nation. Our goals are to modernize perceptions of our industry with key audiences in the state, and positively impact our talent recruitment efforts. As part of the project, we are creating PR assets (videos and a presentation deck) that capture the excitement of Washington’s life science industry. If you have a story to share, please contact Sarah Healy, our Marketing & Communications Manager: or 206.456.9572.

Keynote Address: Mark Alles, Chairman & CEO.
Within the framework of the question ‘what’s possible?’ Mr. Alles addressed the extraordinary transformation that is happening in the cancer field, how it affects both depth and breadth of stakeholders, and the financial toxicity it has on patients. Mr. Alles spoke about the virtuous cycle of a company from innovation, discovery, development, to growth. Finally, he announced his plans for the Seattle and the greater region, now with over 1,000 employees in the area, Celgene intends to make the region the center of excellence for immune oncology. This is truly a keynote address worth listening to!

Panel Discussion: Addressing Washington’s Life Sciences Workforce Challenges
This panel discussion was moderated by Meg O’Conor, Bannecker Public Affairs. The panelists included: Senator Guy Palumbo, 1st Legislative District, Sean McClain, CEO & Founder, AbSci, Gustavo Mahler, PhD, CEO, AGC Biologics, Kelly Snyder, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Government & Community Relations, UW Bothell.
Each speaker shared their own success stories about how they are tackling the workforce problem. The conversation was lively and interactive. But, most importantly, they left the audience and the life science community with three specific calls to action:
  1. Share your success stories and best practices on development of internships
  2. Participate when high schools or colleges ask for speakers or input on curriculum
  3. Speak up in Olympia for the life science industry and its workforce development efforts
