Life Science Washington releases new report showing strongest job growth in a decade!

After several years of lackluster growth in Washington state’s life sciences industry, we are excited to announce that new employment data reveals a 13% increase from 2014-2017! This represents the strongest growth for the industry in a decade.

The employment expansion taking place across the state can be attributed to significant hiring at companies such as Adaptive Biotechnologies, Juno Therapeutics a Celgene Company, Seattle Genetics, and NanoString Technologies that after years of extensive R&D are now scaling up commercial operations and, in some cases, adding manufacturing in addition to a wave of new companies. While growth has been strong across the entire industry, employment in the medical device sector increased by 14.2 percent in just two years from 2015-2017.

As of 2017, nearly 36,000 individuals are employed in life sciences jobs throughout Washington and earn an average annual wage of more than $93,000, almost 50% more than the average wage for other private sector jobs in our state. You can read the full Economic Impact Report.

This terrific industry wide news ties into two of Life Science Washington’s strategic initiatives: building visibility in our industry and supporting workforce development. This news shines a bright light on the cluster. We worked hard to get the news out and we are pleased to report that the Seattle Times ran a feature story about Washington’s booming life science economy, tying growth in our industry to the need for state investment to address a growing workforce shortage. This report combined with positive media coverage and the wide range of workforce activities that are underway to help support the growth of the industry reinforcing that the vibrancy is back, and we are looking forward to a strong 2019!

Additional articles about our industry’s exceptional employment growth are featured in Seattle Business and syndicated across 25 outlets throughout Washington state.
