As the voice for our industry statewide, Life Science Washington strives to address big industry-wide challenges that require collective action. 2019 was a banner year for us in that regard, as we worked to build industry visibility; ensure our companies have access to needed talent; and support life science entrepreneurs with mentoring and other critical resources. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • In January, Life Science Washington released a new economic impact report showing a 13% increase in employment from 2014-2017. The numbers were so impressive, the Seattle Times wrote a front page story about the growth in Washington’s life science industry, leading to 55 additional articles reaching 59 million people nationwide.
  • The state legislature adjourned in April, having enacted all the major elements of Life Science Washington’s legislative agenda, including sizeable investments in STEM infrastructure and new workforce training programs at our state’s colleges and universities.
  • During our recent Washington State Life Science Summit, we shared publicly for the first time our new video, Washington’s Life Science Industry: Pioneering the Next Generation of Innovation, showcasing Washington's rich history of life science innovation, how our state’s tech and life science industries have converged, and where our industry is going next. This video was made to use as a lead in to public policy panels, legislative briefings, and presentations to audiences unfamiliar with Washington’s incredible life science ecosystem.
  • Washington life science companies have raised more than $3.3 Billion in investments ranging from a tiny seed round of $30,000 to a $2B acquisition.

2020 will be another exciting year

In 2020, Life Science Washington will continue to fuel industry growth across our state as we celebrate 30+ years as the state's life science association.

  • We are launching the next part of our PR campaign which is aimed at attracting top talent from out of state by promoting Washington’s thriving life science industry, abundant opportunities for jobseekers and their spouses, and quality of life that can only be found in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Life Science Washington Institute looks forward to partnering with ARE Launch Labs to ensure our early stage entrepreneurs have access to the full range of mentoring services and resources they need to grow in our region.
  • And, of course, we will be hosting numerous events throughout the year. We are thrilled to confirm James Sabry, MD, Global Head of Pharma Partnering, Roche, and Ameet Nathwani, MD, Chief Digital Officer, Chief Medical Officer and EVP, Sanofi as our Day One and Day Two keynote speakers, respectively, for Life Science Innovation Northwest on April 7-8, 2020! Equally exciting, our own Luke Timmerman will be interviewing Amy Abernethy, MD, Deputy Commissioner, Food and Drugs, FDA in a fireside chat over lunch on Day One.

We look forward to serving you as your state’s association in the new year and working together to continue growing our exceptional life science industry.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

The global smart home healthcare market is exploding as more medical devices are designed for use wherever the patient is, including at home. A report by Research and Markets predicts sales of these devices to reach $30 billion by 2023, up from $4.5 billion in 2017. In many ways, the medtech industry is playing catch-up with consumer technology. The stakes are high, and getting the user experience right is critical.
