Reality Check: Augmented Intelligence is the Future of Healthcare

What was once science fiction is now reality – technology has the ability to match (and surpass) the power of the human brain. There are numerous advantages to augmented and artificial intelligence (AI), and many industries are already leveraging it. In the realm of healthcare, AI can provide benefits ranging from streamlined patient care and increased physician productivity to a greater understanding of genetic, biologic and behavioral patterns. But, what does AI mean for the next generation of medical devices? What are medical device companies considering when they weigh the possibilities of applying embedded intelligence into their products? In this second session of our four-part DeviceConnect series, you’ll hear from experts in the Puget Sound region who are exploring the potential of AI for medical technology.

Eigen Healthcare is a machine learning/healthcare startup leveraging the smartphone as a platform for capturing and quantifying the head and neck physical exam. We have developed hardware and software to record previously irretrievable data, then use it to train machine learning tools that augment the ability of the clinician to make diagnoses related to concussion, severe TBI and the entire spectrum of head and neck pathology.

Doug works with centers of innovation to advance the standard of care through medical devices. With decades of experience in bringing brand expanding and disruptive products to market, Doug understands how to set up teams of wonderful people to succeed.


Doug has delivered flagship products such as Stellaris™ and Stellaris PC™ surgical platforms for Bausch & Lomb, Automatic Optical Inspection systems for Lincoln Laser, and the disruptive product “Design for Test” (DeFT) for Schlumberger Technologies as well as many others. He has employed various artificial neural networks in solving challenges in prediction, image processing, classification and recognition.


Doug holds a BS in Computer Science from A.S.U.’s Honors College and his thesis is “Order Constant Control Over Unbounded Motion Space”.


Doug’s hobbies include music (of course), astronomy, philosophy, “weird physics” and above all, learning.

   
Scott Thielman

Scott leads electronics technology and is charged with bringing products to life through integrated electronics and embedded software. Products with batteries, keypads, displays, motors, sensors, and network connections are all tailored by Scott and his team. An accomplished mechanical engineer, Scott has extensive R&D experience including mechanism design, enclosure design, system modeling, embedded software, electronic circuits, and board layout. Scott’s expertise in these disciplines, as well as compliance testing and FMEA, allows him to create effective solutions and manage medical projects through production both domestically and overseas. Career highlights include leading an R&D team dedicated to improving the performance of a dental hand piece, designing a low flow-rate chiller system for a body contouring ultrasound device, and integrating a ZigBee chipset in a wireless networked product. Scott holds a PhD in mechanical engineering for work on an automated manufacturing system from the University of Washington and he is a Washington State licensed professional engineer

As a global technology leader, she is focused on bringing digital transformation using AI and Machine Learning as tools of change. Krithika has developed several digital assistants that augments human productivity and improve end user experience. Krithika holds a Master Degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics.

Kendall has been part of the medical device industry for over 15 years. Much of his career has focused on advanced technology development for medical ultrasound imaging devices and applications. Career highlights related to AI include leading teams that commercialized a deep learning algorithm for automated bladder volume measurement for the urology market and a machine learning algorithm for coronary plaque classification for the interventional cardiology market. He has product and technology development experience at a range of organizations, including global enterprises, small-medium businesses, start-ups, and national laboratories. Kendall holds a PhD in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis. .
